Lindsay Kate Skinner
Licensed Professional Counselor
My name is Lindsay Kate Skinner and I was born and raised throughout the state of Alabama. My path to becoming a counselor wasn’t very clear for me, but looking back, I see all the signs that this was the career for me from a young age. My journey to becoming a counselor started in high school. While in school I was introduced to an organization called, “peer helpers”. The training I received as a peer helper taught me about mediating arguments between classmates, identifying students who might be dealing with depression, assisting peers who had or were experiencing loss, and showing empathy to my classmates. I loved it. It took a few hard years of college at the University of Montevallo, and a few changes in my major, along with a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, to finally lead me into the role of mental health counselor. My training started in high school and grew tremendously. Once in college, theory and therapy approaches were introduced. I quickly gravitated to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. I use both of these approaches in my daily practice. My specialties revolve around people who experience anxiety, depression, ADHD, low self- esteem, and grief. My goal is to help the clients I serve to develop healthy coping mechanisms and to integrate these skills into their life patterns for all circumstances they encounter. I enjoy the process of being drawn into individual stories as I listen behind my therapist chair during counseling sessions, and eventually becoming a part of my client’s story.
My husband and I also own a photography business, and in this business, I am once again allowed to become a part of different individuals' stories from behind the camera. I really love that both of my passions, photography and counseling, allow me to share in the stories of other people. From my work behind the therapist chair, to my work behind the camera, I enjoy becoming a part of many individual’s life stories. I lean into emotion and creativity in both professions. If you find you need someone to talk with regarding anxious thoughts, negative feelings, unhealthy life patterns, the loss of a loved one, pain from the past, or depressive moods, you are not alone. I would love to help you navigate this journey of life, and become a part of your story.
